Editor’s note

The Clinical Gynecologic Oncology, 9th edition released in 2017 is regarded as a must-have, readable and most comprehensive reference for diagnosis and treatment of gynecologic cancers. As far as we know, the 6th and 8th edition of this book have been translated into Chinese, which have aroused tremendous attention in the field of gynecologic oncology in China. To benefit the physicians and patients in China and to further the communication in the field, we launched a project to dig the stories and ideas behind the book, and to share the recognized leaders’ stories and insights of the filed.

During this project, we were honoured to conduct an interview with Dr. Ritu Salani, the gynecologic oncologist and associate professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, who shared her insights of hot issues in the field of gynecologic oncology, stories of the book as an author and advices to readers.


Expert’s introduction

Ritu Salani, MD (Figure 1), is a gynecologic oncologist and associate professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. She also serves as the director for the Gynecologic Oncology fellowship program. She has a busy clinical practice and has consistently been rated nationally in the top 10% of physicians for patient satisfaction.

Special interests: gynecologic oncology

Born and raised in Springfield, Ohio, Dr. Salani received the medical degree from Northeast Ohio Medical University in Rootstown, Ohio, where she was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha. Dr. Salani completed a residency in gynecology and obstetrics at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia. This was followed by a fellowship in gynecologic oncology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. During this time, she also received Master of Business Administration. After her fellowship, Dr. Salani joined the faculty at The Ohio State University.

About the journey of Clinical Gynecologic Oncology

GPM: What leads you to the study of gynecologic oncology?

Dr. Salani: The opportunity to take care of women with gynecologic malignancies, including surgery and medical management, and provide comprehensive care was critical for me to pursue a career in gynecologic oncology.

GPM: What are your future research directions?

Dr. Salani: Future research directions for me include enhancing survivorship and surveillance after treatment of gynecologic malignancies and identifying improved targeted therapy for our diseases.

About the book Clinical Gynecologic Oncology

GPM: We learned that you are an author of the 8th version of Clinical Gynecologic Oncology. Which chapter you contributed? What inspire you to devote to this book series?

Dr. Salani: This was a textbook I used throughout my training, and continue to use. Being able to contribute to the Ovarian Cancer chapter, was a great honor. Plus, I was inspired to work on this chapter as it let me work with leaders in our field and contribute to a key textbook in gynecologic oncology.

GPM: What you have gained as an author of this textbook?

Dr. Salani: Being an author of a chapter in this textbook has not only helped my own education but has increased my profile in our field.

GPM: Is there any suggestion you would like to share with our readers while reading this book?

Dr. Salani: The field is constantly evolving and having a solid foundation (such as this textbook provides, and continuing to stay up on the literature is key for taking the best care of our patients).
